More information: When I select Ubuntu at login, I get the behavior described. When I select Unity 2D, however, the Launcher does hide. However, I cannot change what triggers unhiding, even though there is a utility for just that purpose, to switch between moving the mouse to the left edge of the screen, or the top left corner.
