I can't make sense of why the gnome-panel updates would make the system
freeze -- there's just nothing in it that would affect nm-applet to the
point of freezing the whole system.

I notice there's been a few suspend and resume cycles in the logs you
attached, maybe this has something to do with it? Does it crash if you
suspend your system, resume it, and try to connect to a wireless
network?
