I've followed your advice. 
I had no linux-alsa-driver-modules-$kernelversion.

I've removed anything related to kernel, installed it again and watched the 
installation progress.
At one point I've noticed there is snd-hda-dkms package, which finally led me 
to solution.

I've notices that this package has version 1.0.0-maverick-mactel1. Since
I did upgrade from maverick, this module has remained and caused me a
conflict with a built in driver.

I've removed the snd-hda-dkms package, restarted and got sound again.

Now everthing works
