I have the same problem, with a Pentium 4 Mobile CPU. After the message "MP-BIOS bug 8254: timer not connected to IO-APIC" Ubuntu starts normally, but tends to freeze unpredictably. With previuos versions of ubuntu there wasn't any problem. The only workaround i've found is to put "noapic" option in the kernel line of /boot/grub/menu.lst, but i don't know which functionalities i've lost.
