I confirm that this issue occurs on a freshly installed Ubuntu *as well as* when using the proprietary driver by NVidia. What I used to do until I found out about blindly typing in the LUKS passphrase was to reboot by pressing Cntrl+Alt+Del. Surprisingly, the password prompt was then being displayed where, previously, the screen just had been blank. I'm using the nosplash boot option btw.
