I upgraded my UB 10.10 to 11.04 and have the same issue. Just after the login the OS freezes and does not respond to keyboard or mouse movements. As a work around i booted in failsafe X mode and selected Ubuntu classic (no effects) and currently I am able to login. My video card is Nvidia FX 5500.
