I think this is the problem I am getting as well after upgrade to Natty. I get nothing on the screen without GRUB_TERMINAL=console enabled. My HP vs17x monitor just complains about the settings and asks for 1280x1024 60Hz, then goes to sleep until the login screen is displayed. The console is not a good alternative because it does not fit the screen - i.e it us usable, but ugly.
