In Feisty final, the same symptoms occur. The only different thing is that when X fails to initialize, I somehow managed to reach the login in tty ( I couldn't do it before). >From here I could edit the xorg.conf, and confirm that vesa driver was being >used.
Since this bug is related to ati driver, I suppose what I see is another unrelated bug.
