I've had this intermittent problem for a few ubuntu releases.  The
release notes for 11.04 indicate it's still a problem.

On my computer it seems to be related to the amount of paging done
during the session.  Shutdown timing?  Swap space used?  Something like
that.  More of swap space used, higher probability of the suspend
failure.

I added RAM.  My page file has been unused.  Suspend works reliably.
