I tried turning off Compiz, but that didn't help. This is very erratic for me, the only pattern I can see is that if I leave the computer alone for a minute or so, it will definitely flicker and go dimmer when I hit a key or move the mouse, then maybe flicker again and regain it's usual brightness. I just turned off "Dim display when idle" in System -> Power Management, and it made the screen flicker and go darker! Very weird. I think I should consider using an older kernel, or maybe a development kernel.
