I have a similar problem, but it's much more predictable. If I have "Use Metacity Theme" selected (default in Feisty), the title bar always becomes blank-white when I maximize, and is drawn correctly again when I restore (by clicking on the invisible restore button). If I use the "GL Desktop" GUI to deselect the "Use Metacity Theme" option (which reverts to the ugly default Compiz window theme), window-maximizing works fine again (window tile bars are drawn correctly). With one exception: if the text in the title bar is longer than the titlebar width (something that sometimes happens when browsing websites), and the window is maximized, the Compiz generic titlebar theme will still turn white. So, it never works flawlessly, but the only way for enabling Desktop Effects to be marginally usable is to deselect the "Use Metacity Theme" option in GL Desktop. Wobbly or not-wobbly does not make a difference for me...
