Hi Peter, I'm sorry, but IMHO this bug can not be pursued as is. I took a look at that script
http://www.stchman.com/alsa_update.html and it contains a couple of bad assumptions, -- it works fine as long as everything is perfect, otherwise it breaks -- it also requires that you preform one manual config step, did you do that??? I'm betting that you didn't. The bottom line is that your audio system is now in an unsupportable/undefined state. You initial problem may have been with the microphone mute or with the correct device not being selected or the microphone volume not being set loud enough. All of which are accessed through "System/Preferences/Sound". But now that you have altered your alsa system, it is anybodies guess as to what the problem is. One suggestion is that you forget the script and follow the step by step instructions at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto Pay particular attention to the part about configuring your "options". Hopefully that will get your system back on track. otherwise you will probably need to reinstall alsa back to the original condition and then start from there to troubleshoot your problem.
