Thanks! I'll look at this in detail before I finish today. Re your question about a fake initial protective partition, I think we can probably leave things as they are for natty. Fixing bug 746313 should reduce the incidence of this, and TBH I think that GRUB's behaviour of requiring the first partition to be the protective one should be changed anyway.
