I set my config to manual and can successfully connect to a test SwissVPN account. AFAICT, this works.
Can you provide further information about your connection? Are you certain all settings are properly set to agree with the server's configuration? Setting incorrect settings for encryption, MPPE and others may cause connections to appear established but not carry any data. You should probably try without changing any of the settings in Advanced.
