This is especially frustrating, as a even a user who has understood the
concept of a necessary filesystem check is left with the "No init found.
Try passing init= bootarg." error message without reference to a
silently failed e2fsck or the ability to run it from the livecd. Also, a
simple use of Knoppix or some other livecd will probably fix the
filesystem corruption in minutes. (At least, it did for me.)

(By the way, the palimpsest also fails silently under these conditions.)
