Public bug reported:

Due to several bugs in Kernel 2.6.20-15 with my configuration (reported
in launchpad), I have decided to boot with old kernel (2.6.17-11) that
worked fine, but I report this kernel panic:

VFS: Cannot open root device "UUID=28c3c43f-b0c1-40fb-9249-c94fb5ee0220" or
unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

The substitution of UUID with /dev/sda1, don't resolve the problem.

** Affects: Ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
