Hi again. Just to confirm, dropping screen depth to 16 bits works OK (i.e. full witdth). The window manager problems were due (I think) to a corrupt GCONF.
When in 24bit, I attempted to solve this through DRICONF but was unable to find any settings which prevented the problem occuring.
