I tried a different fix I'd seen involving a startup script to make sure gpg-agent starts and a shutdown script for gpg-agent. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/gpg-issues-with-kmail-and-to-a-lesser-extent-alpine-752687/ Not quite sure what happened, but I lost access to Eudora/Thunderbird and Firefox as soon as I tested it. I removed everything, simply unchecked the gpg-agent box, and kgpg now starts normally on startup and peacefully coexists with everything else in the System Tray. YMMV.
