"This feature is generating a lot of trouble with a *lot* of programs, even well maintained ones, because people are assuming "Gnome 2 = no grip"." You're totally right, and I also don't see a way to guess the grip is present or not. I think it might be a good idea to report this bug to Ubuntu or Gnome (whoever backported this feature).
