I think this is a good use case for menu items allowing modifier keys for menu items to perform expert variations on their normal functions. If clicking (or pressing Enter on) a bookmark menu item opens it, Ctrl+clicking (or pressing Ctrl+Enter on) it could open it in a new window or tab, just as it does for links in Web pages.
