Tested problem with Mainline kernel. The main problem still existed. This was different: There is also a pendrive icon on the Unity panel that will not go away until the card is removed. It presents you with an eject selection that appears not to do anything.
With the Mainline kernel the pendrive icon on the Unity panel disappears as soon as the drive is unmounted with either the "eject" or "safely remove hardware" options.
