I've confirmed that if you start clamtk with root access (gksudo or
kdesu) it will trigger a signature update attempt.  This is not strictly
speaking necessary for signatures.  Klamav manages to do it using user
level access.

Having looked at both recently, klamav is a much more feature complete,
functional solution at this point in time.
