Hey David, sorry for not following up on this.
For some reason an update had disabled my input device (I can't think of anything else that would have triggered this..) I have been able to re-enable it in the sound preferences and had no more trouble since. BTW: I have a Lenovo Think Pad Edge 13" (Intel) - are you sure "asus" is what I should put in there? Might want to think about renaming that option, whatever it does. :-) Greetings and sorry again for not updating.
