Hello,
I also encountered the this problem in 10.04. (a totally installation, not
upgrade)
the problem scenario is, after reboot, in the beginning, the sound is audible,
however,
once changing the sound volume or drag the progress bar in the Totem Movie
Player,
the sound becomes crackling noise.
I tried apt-get update;apt-get upgrade,
and re-installed the alsa-base packages.
Following is my box info, ( I tried "apport-collect -p alsa-base 502255", but
it prompted that:
