thanks for the quick response. indeed i've been using the workround you suggested with the drawbacks you mentioned. (and the extended info isn't dockable but that's just a wart) i can appreciate that there are many subtleties with this, including the question of how persistent you'd want the file to be, where you'd put it and so forth.
