I can confirm this bug in an up-to-date feisty beta install on my
laptop.

My setup:

   Thinkpad T41 with ipw2100
   Network-manager 0.6.4-6ubuntu7
   Kernel 2.6.20-15-generic

** Attachment added: "Syslog output when trying to create an ad-hoc unencrypted
network"
   http://librarian.launchpad.net/7334870/syslog.txt

** Summary changed:

- ad-hoc networks don't work with ipw2200
+ ad-hoc networks don't work with ipw2100/2200

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: network-manager

On my Samsung X20 notebook (with Ubunut Edgy 6.10), i can't create an ad-hoc
network using the NetworkManager (0.63). And also I can't join any ad-hoc
network with the Network Manager. I've tried that with no encryption.
On the command line, those things work.
+
+ This bug is reproducible in both Edgy and Feisty.
