Public bug reported:

Work around. Use shotwell rather than nautilus to peruse images in
remote desktop.

I attempted to set up VNC via ssh. Server is on 64 bit same version
ubuntu lenovo ThinkCentre desktop to which I have full access, viewer on
the 64 bit lenovo laptop from which I've launched this report. I start
the VNC server on the desktop, start the viewer on laptop. The desktop
appears as I expect. Next I look for a picture of the house stored on
the desktop to send to my sister, which was the whole reason for setting
this up. I didn't have to walk downstairs. On the remote desktop I
click Places-->Pictures and get the directory displayed by nautilus, I
suppose. This contains various images and subdirectories. Nautilus is
in list view for this directory and shows thumbnails of the pictures and
file folders for the subdirectories in color and all that. When I
double click one of the images (starting "image viewer" or whatever)
nautilus quits, the picture does not display. Except that it worked
once on a small picture in /tmp but not repeatable. (I ran ps
xau|grep nautilus finding just two nautilus sessions so there aren't
10 suspended or hung nautiluses.) In fact, gnome-terminal also quits
after a few commands. Emacs, my most used interface, displays the
pictures and seems to run just fine. However, I can peruse pictures
faster with a large icon view. Or I can open the pictures with gimp or
shotwell---OH there's my work-around. Shotwell displays reasonable size
thumbnails with the file names.

Good luck diagnosing this. I'll send details of my vnc connection and
whatever you need from server or viewer. I successfully used vnc quite
a bit several years ago only in that case a group of IT professionals
were the system administrators.
