I ran into the same issue with the not combined menu bar again.
You can reproduce it under Maverick doing the following steps:
1. Login in your Unity 2D session with working menu bar
2. Logout
3. Login again into Unity 2D Session. Now the menu bar will not combine anymore.
To resolve this problem and to get a working menu bar again delete
"/home/user/.gconf/desktop/%gconf.xml".
Unfortunately this will revert some settings of your desktop to default. So be
careful.
