Hi, Please see my comments below. I hope this information helps
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, I upgraded my version of Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04 (Alpha) using the update manager applet in Ubuntu 10.10. My system was working perfectly prior to the upgrade. When I powered on my computer under 10.10 it would boot normally. The system does not have a dual boot installed - Ubuntu 10.10 is the only system. There was no boot menu configured under GRUB in the 10.10 installation. 2. the behavior you expected, and I have performed distribution upgrades to working Ubuntu systems in the past, using this same hardware. This includes distribution upgrades from a stable release to the Alpha of the next release. During these upgrades, the operation of GRUB was never affected, ie following the restart at the end of the upgrade the computer booted into the new system. 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). During this upgrade the update manager downloaded and installed all updates normally with no errors, and it was not interrupted in any way. At the end of the installation I was prompted to restart. Upon restarting the machine booted into the GRUB screen with a GRUB prompt. The only way I am able to boot the computer is to manually invoke the GRUB commands every time I boot. The machine suspends and resumes from suspend fine. in addition, I checked that a /boot/grub/grub.cfg file exists and to my limited knowledge this file appears to be correct. I also tried renaming the grub.cfg to grub.conf in case GRUB was invoking the old filename - this also did not work. I also tried using the grub-update command from a terminal as well as the startup-manager and this did not solve the problem. I hope this information helps.
