I agree with a need for a button to revert the Dash size to small, and remembering the user choice next time Dash opens.
For a close button, I'm not sure, I like lean, and pressing Esc or re- clicking the button that initiated Dash should work. Oops, I just noticed, if you initiate Dash by pressing "Applications" or "Files & Folders", re-clicking those do not close Dash.
