I think there's a misunderstanding about this bug. The issue I had was
that network manager took control of all interfaces regardless of the
way they were configured in /etc/network/interfaces. So using that file
was not a work around at the time I reported this bug. If that now works
then this is fixed for my purposes as I don't want/need network-manager
to control my interfaces anyway.

Whether or not there are people out there who want two nm managed
interfaces active at the same time is another question ;-)
