Thanks for the hint, Omer Akram. I tested on my Natty installation in virtualbox 4.04. gnome-settings-daemon is still running, but obviously not functioning well.
I copied the crash-file from /var/crash to my home directory,and then, in a terminal window, I ran the following commands : franco@natty:~$ ps ax |grep sett 1325 ? Ssl 0:01 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon 1656 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep sett franco@natty:~$ kill -KILL 1325 franco@natty:~$ gnome-settings-daemon and this fixes the problem temporarily (for this gnome session).
