Steve, what happens if you open, then save the calendar ics file in iso-8859-1 (or -15 or whatever)? Can Evolution then read it?
Also, does evolution crash immediately? I suspect it actually doesn't and hangs around for a little while before it shows a "calendar has shutdown unexpectedly" message, if it does.
