Ok, this thread pointed me at the "system->administration->additional drivers" menu link, but the Ubuntu 10.10 desktop manual still says to look for "system->administration->hardware drivers". The manual(s) needs updating...
It would be good to see an actual "hardware driver manager" option made available to users/admins.
