Binary package hint: firefox

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 from my latest install disk, while connected by my DSL
to the web.
The installation proceeded with dvd disk activity and online activity (mirror
site?). My Acer
laptop restarted normally, and the firefox browser began with a clean slate.
When I received
an "Update Manager" prompt, I clicked on it and was challenged for my root
password.
The update did not begin. I got another challenge for my password, again, and
again, and again.
I expected an update download. It did not happen.
