I have a Natty as a VirtualBox-Machine under Jaunty. There was a broken
virtualbox-x11-guest-utils package in Natty which made the virtual
machine simply turn off on X11 start. The grub menu didn't appear by
itself. I reported the problem but was told that Jaunty is no longer
supported.

I simply think that you can't detect every situation that requires the
grub menu. What if you have a shutdown command in an /etc/init/-script?
(don't ask why, but it may happen)
