This is due to the removal of the Notification area, which is deprecated per http://design.canonical.com/2010/04/notification-area/ If you try it in the "Ubuntu Classic Desktop" mode you will find that it still appears.
padevchooser either needs to switch to the indicator API, or somehow be merged into the sound menu.
