I have the same problem on 10.10 when I first resize my screen before running emacs-snapshot. However, emacs23 works fine. In https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/emacs23/+bug/445402, it seems to be the same bug and it was fixed for emacs23. Maybe, it is enough to port this patch for emacs-snapshot?
