I think I've solved it! In Windows the socket was working perfectly well, so how could the plug not be correctly inserted? Well, apparently it can be in well enough for Windows but not Linux. In Windows the plug (though not fully in) took a signal and inhibited the line out from the other outlet. In Ubuntu the plug (untouched from how it was above) did neither thing. In working at (and round) this I have swapped between the two operating systems and the pattern was consistent -- in one operating system the headphones worked, in the other they didn't That fact, plus that the 'headphone' socket control on Alsamixer did nothing, but the 'front out' (or something) controlled the headphone socket convinced me that there was a problem. So either jamming the plug in HARD has fixed the problem, or else it has fixed itself. My apologies to anyone who might have been taxing their brains about this, Phil
