Scott Cowles Jacobs, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make
Ubuntu better. This issue was unreproducible via Ubuntu 10.10
LibreOffice Writer at the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/614956/+attachment/1480959/+files/Bewerbung.doc
&& lowriter -nologo Bewerbung.doc

Click File -> Save As -> File type: Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)
drop down -> Save button -> Yes button -> Keep Format button -> close
then reopen at the Terminal:

lowriter -nologo Bewerbung.doc

Notice all the .jpg files are still there. Does this work for you?
