"Because others do it" is not the argument.  The argument is that Ubuntu
seeks to be a more mainstream operating system.

It is not entirely illogical to suggest that mainstream users would
expect an 'alternate' operating system to behave in a similar fashion to
the operating system with which they are familiar.

Finally, when the full overarching design is considered, sound design
greatly integrates immersion and helps to communicate the overall design
pattern.  Granted, Ubuntu is woefully short on this design scheme -- but
that isn't to suggest that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater.
