Possible, but something else has to be launching the other session. The only thing in a default Ubuntu install that should be launching portmap is /etc/init/portmap.conf, which will only launch one instance at a time. If portmap is running at the end of the boot, what's the result of 'status portmap'? I.e., is the portmap that's running /supervised by upstart/?
