I experienced this problem on a fresh Maverick install from a USB key shortly after its release. The new PC was set up with a modern 1080p monitor and then relocated to another site and paired with an older Dell monitor. The older monitor was not properly recognized and I could only log in to a CLI. When trying to use jockey-text to remove the nvidia drivers and attempt a re-install I received the same error reported above.
