Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

The /var/log/daemon.log from your system suggests that mysql is
insisting that you set initial passwords before proceeding.  It would
like you to do:

/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h lturnbow-laptop password 'new-password'

Hopefully these steps will be sufficient to allow updates to proceed
again.  Please let us know how it goes.
