Are you using the same motherboard?  A GigaByte GA-M55plus-S3G ....

I've noticed 3 more BIOS updates since (From F7 to F10) on their
website.  One of these claims "Better USB compatibility"  Whether this
fixes the problem or not, I havn't tried as I don't have any more USB
devices to test (destroy)

Try your hard drive in another computer.  I bet it's currupted.  So far
I killed a 512M USB key, a hard drive case, a printer, a ATI remote, and
a scanner so tread carefully!
