Hi Mike, Let's focus on the fork() hangs in this bug. It's true that the two could be related, but the symptoms don't quite line up.
You say you can reproduce the behavior on 2.3.32-311. Do you have a procedure for getting an instance into the broken state, so you can then cause fork() hangs with spinning CPUs? Also, is irqbalance running on your instances?
