I have recently upgraded to feisty, and have just run into the same
problem.

I think I first upgraded the initram-stuff (which complained that the kernel
was too old), then I upgraded the kernel.
Re-installing and dpkg-reconfigure'ing does not seem to work.

In the initrd-shell, the only devices listed in /sys/block are the ram-devices
and hdd (an ATAPI dvd drive).
This is after modprobe ide-disk and ide-generic.
So it seems all the IDE stuff except ATAPI does not work...

An initrd.img with the problem is attached.

(My planned next steps: running mkinitramfs by hand, and/or looking at
which modules are normally used.)

Regards,
eriksoe
