Public bug reported: When booting off the Ubuntu 7.04 beta Live CD, X cannot start. Here are my system specs:
HP Compaq nw8440 Intel Core Duo 1.83 GHz 1 GB RAM ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 graphics controller with 256 MB of video memory WiFi with a BCM4311 chipset I've checked the CD for defects (none found), and attempted to boot both in normal mode and safe graphics mode. Kubuntu 6.06 and 6.10 both boot correctly with the VESA driver (the free ATI driver does not work). The X log reports the following (when starting in safe graphics mode): [...] (EE) VESA(0): No matching mode (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found It also is having problems loading the bcm43xx driver. In 6.06 and 6.10, to get wireless working, I had to blacklist bcm43xx before installing ndiswrapper - and, from what I've read, in 2.6.20, bcm43xx is still considered unstable. bcm43xx continues to die, and finally dumps out the following: [117.572000] bcm43xx: Error: Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed. [123.520000] bcm43xx: Error: Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed. (It'll continue to dump this to the console if you let it sit for a while) I cannot log into the system, so I am unable to get any logs. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- X does not start when booting from 7.04 beta CD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/104993 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
