Sorry for spamming with updates.  I think I've stumbled upon two bugs:
one dealing with Ubuntu _detecting_ my monitor (the nv) driver.  If I
use the nv driver (or just zap my config file) 1440x900 works fine once
I add it in there.  So this bug just means that Ubuntu didn't recognize
my monitor, but once I tell it what it can do, Ubuntu works fine.  So
just a small detection issue there.

The other bug seems to be with nVidia's binary driver which misdetects
my monitor, and refuses to run at 1440x900.  I'll be looking for what I
can do there.

So long story short: this bug is about Ubuntu just not correctly setting
up my monitor, once I edit xorg.conf, it works fine.
