OK, so using  mainline kernel 2.6.37-999-generic #201101121009 SMP Wed
Jan 12 10:10:37 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux  everything works like a charm
:) Display dimming, suspend to ram and hibernation all are now possible
with no problems.

For those experiencing the same issue, pls keep in mind that you still
need to install the newest Nvidia drivers from nvidia's website. The
drivers available in ubuntu repository still give black screen problem
but this I think was reported elsewhere.

OK, so I think this will be resolved in upcoming releases of Ubuntu.
